Join us for the inaugural exhibition “Compact Assembly” featuring work by 25 artists forming a collective to show a diverse range of artistic practices. Through various conceptual, material, and aesthetic components, this exhibition will make visible the shared nature of those spread far apart.
After bonding through time and place during their graduate studies at the Mount Royal School of Multidisciplinary Art at MICA (Baltimore, MD), this group of artists moved forward in their careers as makers, taking on new challenges in new cities. “Compact Assembly” brings the group back together, cultivating an expanded and matured idea of what it means to support and celebrate the work of such a diverse crowd. The exhibition presents a wide range of practices by artists from China, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, Israel, Pakistan, the United States, and Puerto Rico.
Taking place at Walter Otero Contemporary Art in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the exhibition serves as an opportunity for the collective to visit the home of their peer, Edward Victor Sanchez. Through his efforts and that of the curating team, “Compact Assembly” brings forth an experience which emphasizes innovation, conversation, and collaboration. This exhibition breaks away from individual tendencies and seeks to maintain an environment of integration and community engagement.
“Compact Assembly” is curated by Edward Victor Sanchez, Bryan Funk, Maren Henson, Mandy Chesney, Giulia Piera Livi, and Xin Ni.
It is on view at Walter Otero Contemporary Art from May 30 to August 16, 2019. An opening reception will take place Thursday May 30th at 7:00 PM.
